There are many Health and Safety Accreditation’s available and we know that it can be daunting for business owners, so we have outlined the most common options for you here and how Cunningham Safety Consultants can help you to achieve them;

WHAT IS CHAS ?

The CHAS health and safety assessment scheme is a pre-approval scheme to allow contractors to show potential clients that they meet the required health and safety standards.

The main purpose of CHAS is to avoid repeated applications by suppliers and contractors to become approved as local authority suppliers and to improve health and safety in small to medium sized businesses. Whilst the CHAS assessment scheme is a local authority and government backed scheme, it can be used by any organisation looking to short list suppliers and contractors and can save time and money for all parties.

How do I become CHAS approved?

Cunningham Safety Consultants can provide you with the expert knowledge and documentation to complete your CHAS application.

Cunningham Safety Consultants will review your current documents and attend sites to make sure the documents are relevant to the work to be undertaken. Cunningham Safety Consultants will ensure you achieve your accreditation by doing the work for you. We have a 100% success rate with all companies that work with us.

What is Safecontractor?

Safecontractor was initially developed as a bespoke project for a Property Management client who wished to outsource the annual vetting of contractors on its approved list. Interest shown by other similar clients identified the potential for a standardised system that could be offered to the whole of the company’s client base.

In 1999 SupplyLine was born. After further development the product was expanded to provide web based access to its clients and was re-branded as Safecontractor in 2003.

Steady growth and the adoption of the system by some major brand names such as Kellogg, Debenhams Retail Plc, Home Retail Group and General Motors UK, saw entry into new client markets and further growth in contractor members.

What is Constructionline?

The UK’s largest register for pre-qualified contractors and consultants. In terms of efficiency, time and cost saving and best practice, Constructionline is proven to deliver for public and private sector organisations alike. For suppliers to the construction industry, Constructionline means that you no longer need to repeatedly fill in standard pre-qualification forms for every construction tender. What’s more, with 8,000 buyers already using the Constructionline database to source contractors and consultants, Constructionline is a great tool to market your organisation

By providing an up-to-date register of pre-qualified suppliers for construction contracts, Constructionline is a commonsense solution that 8,000 buyers from over 2,000 organisations are already making the most of. They pre-qualify all of their suppliers to government standards, and maintain relationships with a range of industry.

What is Acclaim ?

A health and safety accreditation service exclusive to Constructionline members

Constructionline have teamed up with Capita Symonds to offer an optional health and safety assessment as part of the Constructionline application process so you can get pre-qualified and health & safety assessed all in one place.

How Do I become Acclaim Approved?

The Constructionline Health and Safety Appendix has been replaced with the Acclaim Accreditation Questionnaire. This questionnaire is designed so that the answers to each question can be assessed by a team of trained and experienced assessors for members who want a ‘third party’ health and safety accreditation.

Members that choose not to have the health and safety assessment, will still be required to complete the questionnaire so buyers are able to view responses and supporting documentation or upload a valid SSIP certificate.

Cunningham Safety Consultants  can assist you in gaining all of your Health and Safety accreditations!

What is SMAS?

As SMAS Ltd is a Registered Member of the Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) Forum, your SMAS Worksafe certificate should be recognised by many other SSIP member schemes – meaning that you should not have to complete further full Health & Safety assessment questionnaires for SSIP member schemes (who offer mutual recognition), whilst your certificate remains valid.

Many Clients will now only use contractors and consultants selected from an approved database who have demonstrated the appropriate level of competence in their H&S management systems. Clients can be assured that contractors and consultants who have been assessed and accredited by an SSIP member scheme have achieved the initial threshold of competence to provide specific services. Cunningham Safety Consultants will assist you in completing SMAS and deal with them directly on your behalf.

How do I become approved?

The key documents you will need are:

  • H&S Policy
  • Sample Method Statements and Risk Assessments
  • Information on H&S Training (certificates/records etc)
  • Information on your current insurances
  • Sub-contractor assessment processes
  • Accident records
  • Any additional information for some industries

What is SSIP?

In April 2007, an initial meeting was held at the Health & Safety Executive’s Headquarters, which included representatives from the Contractors’ Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS), Constructionline, Exor and the National House-Building Council (NHBC) to discuss the potential for the SSIP Forum.

Following further regular meetings over the next two years, SSIP Forum founder members agreed and signed up to an ethos that it should act as an umbrella organisation to facilitate mutual recognition between health and safety pre-qualification schemes wherever it is practicable to do so.

Importantly, the SSIP Forum will work to actively advise and influence clients (buyers) on acceptable interpretation and appropriateness of health and safety competence standards in the UK.

Both public and private sector clients (buyers) who run their own approved or preferred list of contractors require contractors and consultants wishing to be placed on those lists to have their health and safety competence assessed at the pre-qualification stage This places a time-consuming and costly burden on all parties involved which is further exacerbated by the number of times a business is required to go through repeated pre-qualification.
All of the above along with Cunningham Safety Consultants acting as your Health and Safety Consultant will allow you to be come accredited. We will do it all for you !
